Nose Dogs Newsletter
Volume 1
Welcome to My Monthly Newsletter!
Hi there. Judith Guthrie here. Some of you know me from scent work trials, others from in-person training sessions or webinars on ScentWorkU.com, and a few of you have met the dogs I raise at Dark Moon Farm and Kennels, where we develop Detection K9s for professional work, service, sport, and companion dogs. | ![]() Judith Guthrie |
You’re receiving this because you signed up for training updates, and I thought you might be interested in joining something a little more: a monthly newsletter that brings all of this together.
And if it’s not your thing, no hard feelings. You can unsubscribe at any time and still receive updates on training and seminars.
I’m excited to share the journey with you.
In this issue:
🐾 Should you pattern containers or let your dog lead?

🏆 A significant milestone for my kennel
The Debrief That Got Everyone Talking: Advanced Containers?!?
I didn’t see this one coming, but this Advanced Containers debrief turned out to be one of the most viewed, shared, and talked-about videos on the entire AKC Judges Debrief Facebook page.
Really?!? Advanced Containers? Yep. Same reaction here.
Should You Let Your Dog Sniff Other Items During Container Searches?
Given the interest in the debrief, I wanted to address when you should let your dog have the leash and figure it out on its own, and when it’s time to start shaping more efficient patterns.
I share why I give green dogs room to work, how experienced dogs learn to solve complex odor problems, and when it makes sense to start training pattern-based searches.
Free Webinar Replay: Inside Detection Dog Training with Judith Guthrie
I recently gave a free webinar for Scent Work University that takes you inside how I raise and train professional detection dogs and what I expect from them once they’re fully operational.
It’s a cool look at how these dogs are selected, trained, and tested to do real-world work.
And even though the focus is on detection, there’s plenty here for sport handlers too.
This one’s free to watch, but if you'd like more, I’ve got nearly 40 webinars available on ScentWorkU.com.
They’re paid, but there’s a wealth of information, ranging from training approaches to odor theory and beyond.
Why I’m So Proud of These Two Puppies and What They Represent to My Kennel
This is a huge moment for me and for Darkmoon Farms & Kennels. Not one, but two pups from my program have joined the Penn Vet Working Dog Center, one of the top detection dog training and research programs in the country.

These two pups mark something really meaningful for me and for my kennel.
Where I’ll Be Judging This Summer and Fall
It’s a packed couple of months! Lots of judging and a couple of training seminars in the works. And, if you’re trialing at any of these events, come say hi:
Collie Club of Washington – Aug 2–3, Monroe, WA
Greater San Diego Basset Hound Club – Aug 3–31, Jamul, CA
Puget Sound Vizsla Club – Aug 22–24, Nine Mile Falls, WA
Houston Area K9 Scent Work Club – Sept 6–7, Katy, TX
Spokane Dog Training Club – Sept 12–14, Davenport, WA
Bristle Nose Scent Work Club – Sept 19–21, Salt Lake City, UT
That’s it for the first edition. Thanks for being here. If you ever want to reach out for training, judging, have questions, ideas, or want to say hi, I’d love to hear from you. And if you know someone who might enjoy this newsletter, please feel free to share it with them.
Happy Hunting!
